Be aware of the steps of growth.
Have a role model or a mentor.
Have a dream.
Know that when you are challenged that you are growing!
If you don’t have something specific you want to work towards – focus on the best version of yourself.
So often we compare ourselves to others. To other people that have a different skill set. Who have different life experience. Who have been working longer. Who have different interests. We will always be at different stages of development, growth. Coming back to the analogy of plants. We are all different plants and grow at different rates and flower at different times in our lives, seasons. Some of us require more sunlight, more rain.
The point is that comparison is harmful. Feeling inspired by your own desire to improve is empowering.
It takes time for growth and everyone has a different set of focus and life.
The next time you look across at another nurse and compare, just stop and consider your own growth and change up to today. And that where you want to be and who you want to become might be quite different to them.
So please, stop comparing yourself to others & instead consider where you have come from and where you want to be.
As a younger nurse I would look in awe as other nurses completed their medication rounds and had completed all their hygiene and wound care before morning tea! This wasn’t always possible but you get the jist. I would barrage myself for not being able to be better, faster. It took me some time to find the kindness and insight to realise that a lot of skills require time and experience. Opportunities open up with commitment and intention.
Growth is a choice. And our growth in this life is all unique. Never compare. Be grateful for your own journey to this point and the potential future?
